Bái Đính Pagoda – A Buddhist Wonder in the Heart of Ninh Bình

Update: 24/09/2025
Nestled on Bái Đính Mountain in Tây Hoa Lư Ward, Ninh Bình Province, Bái Đính Pagoda spans an impressive area of over 700 hectares. Renowned not only for its majestic natural landscape, the pagoda is also recognized as one of Vietnam’s largest Buddhist cultural centers. It harmoniously combines the ancient charm of a thousand-year-old temple with the grandeur of the newly built complex, which holds multiple records in Asia and Southeast Asia.

Bái Đính Pagoda consists of two areas: the ancient temple and the new complex. The ancient temple, hidden on a quiet mountainside, preserves sacred relics such as Sáng Cave, Tối Cave—where Buddha and deities are worshiped—and the Ngọc Well. The new complex, constructed in the early 21st century, draws inspiration from traditional East Asian Buddhist architecture. It features elegantly curved tiled roofs, a nearly 3-kilometer-long corridor lined with more than 500 meticulously hand-carved Arhat statues, each with a unique expression and spirit.

The most striking highlight of the complex is the gilded bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, standing 10 meters tall and weighing 100 tons, solemnly placed in the Pháp Chủ Hall. This radiant golden statue has been recognized by the Asia Book of Records as the largest gilded bronze Buddha statue in Asia, underscoring both the artistic and spiritual significance of the site. Bái Đính Pagoda also boasts many other notable records: a 36-ton bronze bell, the longest Arhat corridor in Asia, and the largest bronze Maitreya Buddha statue in Southeast Asia.

A visit to Bái Đính is not only an opportunity to admire extraordinary architectural achievements but also a chance to immerse oneself in a serene and spiritual atmosphere amid lush mountains and tranquil waters. During festivals, especially the Bái Đính Spring Festival, thousands of Buddhists and visitors gather here to pray for peace and blessings while participating in unique cultural and religious activities.

With its remarkable blend of nature, history, and spirituality, Bái Đính Pagoda stands as the largest Buddhist pilgrimage site in northern Vietnam and a cultural–tourism symbol of Ninh Bình and the nation as a whole. It is undoubtedly an unmissable destination on the journey to explore the ancient capital, where visitors can find peace of mind and appreciate the beauty of Vietnamese Buddhist culture.
