Ninh Bình is a land known as the hometown of many talented and virtuous people, a place where distinctive cultural and historical heritage of the Vietnamese nation has been gathered and preserved through thousands of years of nation-building and defense. On this land rich in tradition, each historical site stands as a witness to time, contributing to the unique cultural identity of the former imperial capital. Within this rich flow of heritage, Đông Hội Temple, located in Đông Hội Village, Nam Hoa Lư Ward, Ninh Bình Province, stands out as a monument deeply marked by history. Not only an ancient spiritual site, the temple is also a vivid testament to the resilient will and the spirit of defending the Fatherland of generations of Vietnamese people since the early periods of history.

Đông Hội Temple was built in a special geographical position on the bank of the Vạc River, an area that in the past was an important defensive stronghold and witnessed major historical events of the country, including periods such as the era of the Trưng Sisters, the Trần Dynasty, and the time of Quang Trung. These periods were marked by many heroic battles as well as long-standing folk beliefs and traditions. The temple is considered one of the earliest temples in Ninh Bình Province.

Đông Hội Temple is dedicated to the worship of three generals from the time of the Trưng Sisters: Đống Âm Đống Bụt, Diệu Vũ Dương Uy, and Trần Thị Ngọc Hoa. They were talented commanders who made significant contributions to the uprising against foreign domination and were among the outstanding generals of the Trưng Sisters’ era. The worship of these three heroes reflects the belief and tradition of nation-building and national defense preserved by local people through many generations.

The temple’s architecture follows a traditional style, arranged in the traditional “Đinh”-shaped layout with the Front Hall, the Second Hall, and the Main Sanctuary paved with traditional bricks, with some sections influenced by architectural styles of the Nguyễn Dynasty. The stone carvings and interior decorations show high artistic value, especially the stone carving system in front of the Main Sanctuary and the finely crafted central wooden beams and rafters.

Many valuable artifacts are preserved at the site, such as incense burners, altar tables, a bronze bell, a ceremonial throne, ancestral tablets, and especially a drum of the Tây Sơn army — evidence that the temple has experienced many historical changes while continuously serving cultural and spiritual activities.

With its remarkable historical, architectural, and cultural values, Đông Hội Temple was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Historical and Cultural Relic under Decision No. 57/QĐ-BVHTT dated January 18, 1993. This decision recognizes the important role of the temple within the heritage system of the province and the country, and also provides the legal basis for preservation, restoration, research, and promotion of the relic’s value in educating today’s and future generations about national traditions.

Today, Đông Hội Temple serves as a cultural and spiritual center for local residents and visitors from many places. Festivals, traditional rituals, and community celebrations rich in national cultural identity are regularly held here, contributing to the preservation of traditional cultural values and strengthening community bonds.
